Beans

I am trying legumes again. This time canned beans. Is there any concern about some heavy metals from the can? Some cans are covered in some type of plastic from the inside. Is that better or worse?

The plastic is bad if it is the kind that contains hormone disruptors. (BPA) The can will tell you if they don't have it. Sometimes they replace it with something equally bad. Buying dry, organic beans and soaking or sprouting them is safer.

Not eating beans is also a way to avoid all the problems with them.

@judy your recipe is so time consuming. THere is no way that I am cooking this like 3 times a week.. Maybe if I cook like 500g bag at once and freeze single portions in plastic bags or something? I am soaking some beans now. Today I will cook them in pressure cooker. I will try freeze some of them and if they will not give me gas and bloating. I will cook them...

@tim-2 Heh so I don't know why I even started with beans if they are high in pectin? If it gives me loose stool and gas and bloating it means they are just fermenting in me and the endotoxin from that is a lot of stress on the liver right? Some people would say the microbiome will adapt and some people will say that beans will give you always gas..

I couldn't eat any beans, oat porridge, fruit or anything else high in soluble fibre without severe gastrointestinal symptoms until I took dysbiosis herbs for a solid couple of months. I went through 1.5 bottles of the two different brands I ordered. My issues were completely resolved and they haven't come back after cessation of the herbs. After I finished the herbs I started probiotics (without much research or thought) and my symptoms came back with a vengence, I then quit them (I will never take probiotics again, I've explained why they are such a pseudo-scientific scam in other posts) and took herbs for another week before stopping them.

Soluble fibre is very bad for anyone that has dysbiosis, for those that don't it is probably helpful in moderation. If you are getting the symptoms you describe they indicate dysbiosis and what you said about endotoxin and liver stress is correct. In my experience the microbiome definitely does not adapt if one has dysbiosis, things just get worse until herbs or antibiotics are taken to kill off the SIBO and restore balance.

Excess pectin is probably bad for everyone, SIBO or no SIBO but yeah those with SIBO may generate more methanol from it, I'm not sure.

For those that don't have SIBO, pectin in moderation is fine. As I've explained elsewhere methanol and formaldehyde is a general health issue, not a vA detox issue because the whole dehydrogenase discussion with regard to vA detox is a strawman in itself.

@tim-2 Another issue is that it looks like when you eat low FODMAP you don't have gas or bloating. But to me it feels like I am more constipated and "nothing is happening" in the large intestine.. Like there is lack of microbiome and I feel like if I continue eating low FODMAP that I will end up sooner or later with colon cancer or something.. I will try keep eating beans, but smaller amounts.

@jiri

Yeah if SIBO sufferers avoid FODMAP's and soluble fibre they still have dysbiosis. The bacterial overgrowth is living on scraps but still up to no good. Many get convinced by low carb arguments because the theory aligns with their experience with carbs.

As a result of the research I have done I've realized how wonderful herbs and spices are. To cure my dysbiosis I needed capsules of medicinal herbs but culinary herbs and spices play an important role in maintaining a healthy gut. They control SIBO and pathogens like helicobacter pylori and blastocystis.

hey @tim-2

, could you please tell me which herbs you took for that , my family member suffers from severe gastrointestinal symptoms from high fiber . My family member would certainly give a try to those herbs

I cook a whole bag at a time and just refrigerate them, but then I don't have SIBO. I need to update my recipe because I no longer skim the beans, I just pour off the water and replace it until the scum is gone. They take longer to cook, but don't require any attention from me. One more improvement for the recipe: don't add salt until the beans are soft. It is said to slow down the cooking. Let us know if the freezing trick works for you.

@r-2

I used FC Cidal and Candibactin BR because of this study:

I actually wanted Dysbiocide and Candibactin AR but I couldn't find anyone that would ship to my country.

@tim-2 Well I am sure I don't have herb or spices deficiency. In my case SIBO will be due to lower thyroid. So lower stomach acid etc.. Hopefully with vit A detox my thyroid will start working better. So my whole digestion will be better. More stomach acid, bile production which is antibacterial etc.. I will keep eating smaller amount of beans and limit fructose and pectin from other sources.. Btw I read that even white bottom mushrooms are good source of beta glucan? They are somewhat affordable here and also Pleurotus ostreatus. These I can buy here and there..

Healing is not just about deficiencies, killing harmful microbes is another important dimension. Health is circular, pretty sure SIBO can cause thyroid issues too.

Yeah I eat a serving of white mushrooms each day, very tasty and a good source of beta glucan.
